OUTSIDE OUR DOORS

This past weekend we piled everyone in the car and headed into Northern Idaho to do some skiing.  In the spring you may find us packing that same car with our bikes to go ride on the Centennial Trail.  The lakes beckon us throughout the summer months and the apple orchards up on Greenbluff call us in the fall.  You may think this is an article about the miracle of the modern mini-van and all the miles we have put on it, but it is really about how lucky we are to live in Spokane with so much available to us.
Of course I appreciate the beauty of the places we go and this is definitely a reason we all have chosen to live in the great Pacific Northwest.  But it is more than that.  The plethora of things to go, see and enjoy has drawn my family close together and created memories that will forever be etched into our minds and hearts.  It has a way of defining who we are and who we hope to be.
Our kids are bombarded with TV, Facebook, x-box, and texting, and can often be seen doing those things for hours on end.   Culture is pulling at our children and leaving in its trail a lack of true connectedness.  My sister is actually starting to write a book on taking back our families during these media- obsessed times we live in and I love the concept.  It is time that we walk outside our doors and spend time together in community.  We live in a place that feeds us amazing opportunities on a silver spoon.  It will feel right.  It will refresh your soul.  You will be giving your children the best thing you could spend on them…time.  You never know when those life changing moments may happen in life.  It may be a talk you had with your child while geo-caching, a small accomplishment you helped them achieve, or a decision they made while you were roasting marshmallows around the campfire.
The quote by Robert Brault can at times bring me to tears: “Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were big things.”  Yes, I do believe the extraordinary can happen in the ordinary.  I loved running across the finish line with my middle son on Bloomsday.  I loved watching my daughter find the faces on the apple trees for a prize.  I loved getting first tracks on the ski hill with my oldest and racing him down the mountain (we won’t mention who won!).  These are the days!  We live in a place that pleads with us to come outside to play, enjoy and make memories.  Will you answer the call? I know there is no other place I would rather grow my kids on…
